Whether you are working 9 to 5 in a cubicle surrounded by co workers or working alone at home, everyone struggles with focusing and maintaining energy throughout their work day. Expand your horizons beyond your mid day caffeine fix and try these tips for increasing productivity and energy!
- Declutter your space (including your laptop!)
Studies show that unnecessary clutter can lead to distraction and feelings of fatigue. A crowded laptop screen and desk can leave you feeling like your brain has too many tabs open. Take a few minutes to purge unnecessary files from your computer. This simple task can leave you sighing a breath of relief when you open your laptop the next day. Do the same with your work space by eliminating piles of unnecessary paperwork and old coffee cups.
- Invest in a plant.
Researchers have shown that the presence of a plant can elevate mood and increase productivity. Not only that, but the increase of oxygen it provides is also a bonus. Try a small succulent, cactus or indoor plant to start!
- Peppermint oil!
Peppermint oil will work wonders during those groggy morning hours or to help get over that midday slump. Peppermint is a common essential oil that when applied to the temples or the back of the neck can bring more energy than your morning coffee! Want to help out your co-workers as well? Buy an essential oil diffuser to give the whole office a boost.
- Cozy up.
A study done at Cornell University showed that warmer temperatures are key for productivity and accuracy. Don’t let your chilly office bring you down, keep a sweater or a throw blanket in your desk drawer so you can stay warm and focused.
- Get away for lunch.
Changes of scenery have been known to be essential for re-energizing and refreshing your brain. Instead of eating your lunch at your desk take a few minutes to sit outside or move away from your desk for lunch. This simple change in location can give your mind a chance to re-set and your eyes a break from your screen.
- Turn off notifications.
Eliminate constant distraction by turning off the notifications on your most persistent apps. Allow yourself uninterrupted time to focus on work and then reward yourself with small phone breaks every now and then.
Bring some healthy snacks to work to keep your energy level high throughout the day. If you let your hunger get out of control then you may overeat at lunch leading you to feel drowsy and full for the second half of the day. Instead of one big meal break it up throughout the day.
